TAIPEI, July 18, 2024 — The European Union (EU) has issued Directive (EU) 2022/2380 and introduced a new set of essential requirements under the EN IEC 62680 standard. The new European law mandates the use of USB Type-C ports for charging Portable Battery-Powered Devices and Chargers (EPS). The regulation will apply to almost all devices from December 28, 2024, with the exception of laptops to which the regulation will apply from April 28, 2026.
Manufacturers will urgently need to demonstrate that their products meet the requirements established in the EU Common Charger Directive. This includes integrating USB Type-C® receptacles, cables (non-captive), connectors, and chargers (EPS), as well as adhering to USB Power Delivery charging protocols.
The USB Compliance Test Specifications, owned by Universal Serial Bus-Implementers Forum (USB-IF), are the sole standards used for verifying compliance with IEC 62680. Unauthorized laboratories utilizing these specifications for IEC 62680 testing and issuing reports will be at risk of copyright infringement.
Following a thorough assessment of industry and market needs, USB-IF has initiated a compliance program for the EU Common Charger Directive (IEC 62680, USB Type-C® and USB Power Delivery specifications). It is expected to be officially announced and implemented between mid-August and September this year.
